Upon return from her 5 year mission, the U.S.S. Enterprise was subject to upgrades and improvement just as any other vessel would. Known as a “Refit”, nearly all of the ship’s systems were overhauled along with swept back pylons upon which all new nacelles were installed. Rather than “battleship” gray, the craft glistened with pearlescent white surface paneling. The popularity of the ship’s design among modelers rivals that of the original space-frame. This model from Polar Lights measures nearly 3-feet long and features interior structures like the shuttle bay and stands firmly upon its base with the support from a metal rod. Marking decals and assembly instructions accompany the kit with everything contained within in an all-new package. The 1:350 kit will feature a newly designed decal sheet with registry markings, pinstriping, blue and green strongbacks, and more.

Kelvin model kit is based on actual digital visual effects files. This skill-level 3 kit includes clear engine details and deflector dish, as well as a Starfleet registry plaque display base. The kit also includes decals and a full-colour instruction booklet, including detailed painting tips. Packaging features box art by noted Star Trek production illustrator, John Eaves. The U.S.S. Kelvin, Starfleet registry NCC-0514, is noted for its deadly encounter with the Romulan ship Narada, which emerged from a black hole created by the detonation of a red matter device. In the ensuing combat, Lieutenant Commander George Kirk assumed command of the ship, sacrificing himself and the Kelvin by ramming the Narada at full speed, effectively disabling the enemy craft and allowing remaining crew members, including Kirk’s pregnant wife, Winona, to escape via shuttlecraft. It is notable that George Kirk’s son, James Tiberius Kirk, who would grow up to become the famous captain of the legendary U.S.S. Enterprise, was born during the escape.

With its five-year mission completed under the command of Captain James T. Kirk, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 was ordered into dry-dock where it underwent extensive upgrades that affected every aspect of the venerable starship. The silhouette featuring its signature saucer-shaped primary hull was still underlapped by a lower secondary hull. Newly swept back pylons held modernized engines that were capable of warp factor 9. The ship’s skin may have provided the most recognizable change with its marine gray metal plating giving way to a glistening series of panels arranged in patterns that appear reminiscent of ancient Aztec hieroglyphics.
