Fantastic Plastic Von Braun ROUND-THE -MOON SHIP
In 1953, Collier's Magazine published a series of wildly popular articles depicting how America planned to venture into space, to the moon and ultimately to Mars in the latter half of the 20th century. Lavishly illustrated by artist Chesley Bonestell, the missions -- and spacecraft -- depicted were largely the proposals of Dr. Werner Von Braun, the German-born aerospace genius behind the V-2 ballistic missile and later NASA's own Saturn V moon rocket.
In Von Braun's scenario, a manned mission landing would be preceded by a series of manned survey missions to look for viable landing sites. These three-man "Round-the-Moon Ships" would launch from one of Von Braun's proposed wheel-shaped space stations and then travel to the moon along a trajectory that would have them momentarily captured by the lunar gravity and then flung back to Earth. (This "free return" trajectory was what the ill-fated Apollo 13 crew would use to return to Earth in April 1970.) No landing would be attempted during these survey missions.
In 1958, Lindberg Line Models liberally borrowed Von Braun's concept -- uncredited -- when it produced its plastic "U.S. Moon Ship" kit. But no other company has produced the O.G. "Round-the-Moon Ship" in kit form -- until now!
This 1:144 kit was produced exclusively for Fantastic Plastic Models by Central Replication and Production (formally Millennium Models International). Featuring 62 resin cast and 3D printed parts, our kit accurately reproduces Von Braun's original design in painstaking detail. The finished model is 8 inches long.
